/** pn.alerts: 52.0 **/ ** Topic: IRAN COVERUP ACTION ALERT ** ** Written 9:56 am Jun 22, 1991 by peacenet in cdp:pn.alerts ** From: <peacenet> Subject: IRAN COVERUP ACTION ALERT From empower Fri Jun 21 15:35:07 1991 YOU CAN HELP GET COVERUP; BEHIND THE IRAN CONTRA AFFAIR BROADCAST ON YOUR LOCAL TV For two years, THE EMPOWERMENT PROJECT has struggled to get its 1988 film COVERUP; BEHIND THE IRAN CONTRA AFFAIR on U.S. television. National public television refused to broadcast the film without substantial censorship changes, INCLUDING A COMPLETE GUTTING OF THE "OCTOBER SURPRISE" hostage deal section. COVERUP was the first film to reveal this scandal, and is the only film which presents a comprehensive overview of the most important stories suppressed during the Iran Contra hearings. It is the only film that puts the entire Iran Contra affair into a meaningful political and historical context. In late 1990, the Central Educational Network (CEN), a regional PBS distributor, agreed to offer COVERUP to all local PBS affiliates during 1991. As a result, stations in the following state networks and cities have aired, or plan to air the program: The state of Connecticut (aired); The state of Nebraska (bought but not yet aired); Denver (aired 3 times); El Paso (aired); Fort Wayne (aired); Flint (aired); Indianapolis (aired); Kansas City (bought but not yet aired); Memphis (bought but not yet aired); Minneapolis/St. Paul (aired); Plainview NY (bought but not yet aired); Plattsburgh NY (bought but not yet aired); San Bernardino CA (aired); San Francisco (aired); Topeka (aired); The U.S. Virgin Islands (bought but not yet aired). EP has begun a national organizing and advertising campaign aimed at encouraging additional local public television stations to broadcast COVERUP, and failing that, to cablecast COVERUP on local cable stations. Please immediately contact your local P.B.S. television station. Ask them to broadcast coverup. If they have already aired it, ask them to rebroadcast. If they are not listed above, and refuse to buy it, contact Jane at the Empowerment Project, who can tell you whether a local cablecast is possible in your area. If cost is a factor, EP can work with stations in identifying an appropriate underwriter for them. Also, EP will provide press packets to stations and can help organize publicity to advertise air dates. Once COVERUP is scheduled for broadcast, please help publicize and organize around the broadcast. Tell your friends, and be sure to watch. And please, let EP know of your results. TO ORDER a special discount copy of COVERUP, please send a check to the Empowerment Project, 1653 18th. St., Suite #3, Santa Monica, CA 90404 or call (213) 828-8807. For a VHS copy, send $29.95 (plus $4.50 shipping and handling). Or, send $85 for a 3/4 inch copy, so you can make COVERUP available to your local cable station for broadcast. (Not available for cablecast if Coverup has already aired on your PBS station.) ----------------------------- Also, EP has a copy of a wonderful half-hour public access program called "Peacemakers," taped recently, on Coverup and the October Surprise with Coverup's director and co-producer Barbara Trent. The show has excellent information, including on-screen phone numbers for action. To get a 3/4" broadcast quality tape of this show, which you can then take to your local cable station, contact the Empowerment Project at 213/828-8807. -------------------------------------- Finally, there is little hope that Congress will do anything about the October Surprise without a public outcry for action. Please remember to call 202/224-3121 for your Congressperson and Senator, as well as Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, and House Speaker Tom Foley, and demand a congressional investigation of the October Surprise. ** End of text from cdp:pn.alerts **
