Their belongings are taken from them. They are dragged away from their families and friends, and locked into tiny cells. And finally they are forced to pay their own governments for these privileges. Tomorrow, the United Nations will hold a celebration to congratulate itself on this achievement, and to launch a new Decade of Human Rights Abuse. This is the reality behind the myth of the 'War on Drugs'. Every year, thousands of harmless marijuana smokers are the victims of legal persecution in all countries. Around the world, millions have suffered since 1961, the beginning of the United Nations' campaign of discrimination and assault against people who use a less harmful drug than tobacco. In that year, the UN drafted a convention which required all signatory countries to ban marijuana. Tobacco merchants, who sell death to thousands, have the support of their friends in Government, while those who smoke marijuana in their own homes are victimised. They are attacked by the very organs of state which supposedly protect their rights - the police, the courts, and the legislative assemblies. The United Na8tions is responsible for this. On Wednesday 26th June, the 'International Day Against Drug Abuse and Drug Trafficking', the UN will launch a 'Decade Against Drug Abuse'. Its Secretary-General has prepared a special speech for the occasion. Perhaps a more appropriate speech could be delivered by a previous Secretary-General - alleged Nazi war criminal Kurt Waldheim. In separate events planned for this day, a number of prominent citizens around the world will assemble at the behest of the UN, in order to give awards to each other for their efforts in support of the 'War on Drugs'. They should all be ashamed of themselves. Call your local United Nations office to protest this outrage. ______________________________________________________________ NATIONAL ORGANISATIONION FOR REFORM OF MARIJUANA LAWS GPO Box 91, Sydney, 2001, Australia ______________________________________________________________ ** End of text from cdp:pn.announcemen **
