Re: 27 people captured 6/15/91 by National Police
As of today, all the people who were captured by the National Police
while attending an ASDI training seminar are still being detained.
Tuesday, June 18, they were taken before the 2nd Justice of the Peace
in San Salvador, Dr. Elmer Aristarco Flores, where the judge ordered a
further 72 hour period of detention for further investigations before
deciding whether to release or commit them to provisional detention.
The women are at Ilopango prison and the men are being held in cells
at the court (las celdas de los juzgados). It is not clear if the
men will be sent to Mariona given the attack on that prison by the
FMLN on Tuesday night. ASDI is concerned that the men might be
transfered back to the National Police, or sent to Mariona where there
may be reprisals against prisoners for Tuesdays attack.
The judicial authorities have not told ASDI anything about the
equipment and vehicles taken from the training center during the
raid.
REQUESTED ACTION: Please continue to respond with telexes, faxes and
telephone calls, urging immediate release of all being detained,
reuniting the two children with their families, and guarrantees of the
physical and psychological well-being of these people who have been
detained since Saturday morning.
Contact your Congressional representatives and ask them to contact the
State Department, the U.S. Embassy in San Salvador, and President
Cristiani regarding the circumstances of the raid on Saturday and
urging the immediate release of all those detained.
