A lot of birds like fruit. If you put out some apples and
oranges you might get something different. I have a two feeders. One
has sunflower seeds in it and the other is a seed bell. I have tons
of house sparrows and some house finches, but that is it. I've never
even any birds besides those except for crows and gulls in my
apartment complex. I'd welcome a nice cardinal. Oh well.
By diversifying the food you put out, you will attract a
wider variety of birds. Besides various seeds and fruit, try some
suet. The woodpeckers and nuthatches love it. I don't know if
you have nuthatches in San Diego. You should also consider a
hummingbird feeder. You should be able to attract some Anna's
hummingbirds. When I lived in California a lot of birds were
attracted to the fig tree in the backyard, so I think fruit
would be your best best in San Diego.
