FALCONE@ST1.vuw.ac.nz (The avenging Bird of Prey) (06/15/91)
This Album is chock full of 'Great ' Journey songs. Showcasing the talents
of Messers Perry ,Cain ,Rollie and Schon.
Journey is one of the few Bands that have reached a near perfect balance of
Guitar and Synth, Though most of the glory is given to Steve Perry's amazing
voice. Neal Schon { Also released an album with Jan Hammer } shows that the
Guitar makes an excellent counter point to the Vocals. The Keyboard skills
of Gregg Rollie and later Jonathan Cain portrays strength and power and yet
doesn't try to muscle in on the power carried through the song's.
Messers Jackson ,Valory { Bass } ,Londin ,Smith ,Dunbar { Drums } provide
a catchy, Strong and consistant rythymic base for the Keyboards , Guitar
and Vocals to work from.
The Greatest Hits Album has tracks from the albums - Evolution
Infinity
Departure
Escape
Frontiers
Raised on Radio
as well as two songs from film soundtracks.
The Track's are as follows
1} Only the Young ( Perry,Cain,Schon) 1985 4:04
From the movie Vision Quest. Managed to come across better than
the Madonna Song " Crazy for you " from the same Film.
2} Don't Stop Beleivin' (Perry,Schon,Cain) 1981 4:10
From Album Escape
Ho Hum
3} Wheel in the Sky ( Valory,Schon,Fleischman) 1977 4:11
From Album Infinity
A unique vocal effort from Perry, Backed by an unforgettable use of
Guitar and Synth
4} Faithfully ( Cain ) 1983 4:27
From Album Frontiers
This is a song that could turn any 2nd rate Album into a mustby.
Jonathan Cain shows us just how a Ballad can be done. Strong Piano
leading the way through. The guitar as a excellent foil for an
unforgettable Vocal effort. This is a song among songs
5} I'll be alright without you ( Perry ,Cain ,Schon ) 1986 4:33
From Album Raised on Radio
Another Ballad but over shadowed by Faithfully
6} Anyway you want it ( Perry ,Schon ) 1980 3:23
From Album Departure
This song doesn't use any sexual innuendo's it goes out and says
exactly want it wants you to hear
7} Ask the lonely ( Perry ,Cain )
From the Film Two of a kind
I havn't seen the film. But if this song is anything to go by
it must be one humdinger of a tearjerker.
8} Who's crying now ( Perry ,Cain ) 1981 5:01
From Album Escape
Another Perry/Cain ballad, This one is not in the same framework as
Faithfully but it is has a strong feeling to it.
9} Seperate Ways [ Worlds apart ] ( Perry ,Cain) 1983 5:25
From Album Frontiers
This song shows the strength of Synth and Guitar working as a team
From a Solo from the Synth to begin. the Guitar joins in adding a
Body and drive that builds into song that will leave memories echoing
through you mind for the next two tracks
10} Lights ( Perry ,Schon) 1978 3:10
From Album Infinity
One word for this song. Beautiful
Listen with eye's closed and relax
11} Lovin',Touchin',Squeezin' ( Perry ) 1979 3:50
From Album Evolution
One song that can make a Nice Album sound mediocre.
It spoils the whole album
12} Open Arms (Perry ,Cain) 1981 3:18
From Album Escape
This song is good enough to erase the feeling of apathy left over
from Lovin' Touchin' ..
13} Girl can't help it ( Perry ,Cain ,Schon) 3:50
From Album Raised on Radio
A rocking good song. Another of the songs that show how the Synth
and guitar can work together to great effect
14} Send her my love ( Perry ,Cain) 1983 3:54
From Album Frontiers
This is a followup to Faithfully. It captures some of the lonely
aching mood and focuses and projects it
15} Be good to yourself ( Perry ,Cain ,Schon) 1986 3:51
From Album Raised on Radio
A fitting last song. It captures the mood of the entire album and
fires it up with some encouragement to whoever is listening. The
Guitar solo that finishes the song leaves you wishing for more.
