I have yet to even hear about the movie LILY WAS HERE, but I will be sure to see it, simply because I am interested in how the music from the soundtrack will be used. In the meantime, the soundtrack for the movie has been released and clearly is one of the best soundracks I have bought in a long time. David A. Stewart of the Eurythmics is the mastermind behind LILY WAS HERE, along with Candy Dulfar, the Dutsch saxophonist who has released an album of her own entitled SAXUALITY. I am a huge fan of the Eurythmics, and by chance while buying their long-awaited Greatest Hits album, found this gem. Most of LILY WAS HERE is instrumental, similar to the released title track that is presently climbing the Top 40. The remainder of the album, however, focuses more on the smooth, jazzy tone of the sax. It does not, however, slip into dreamy wave-like music (such as Enya) nor jazz itself. Stewart's music envelopes Dulfar's sax with calm precision, making it delicate without being, for lack of a better word, wimpy. There are two non-instrumental songs on the soundtrack that are worth noting. "Second Chance" has vocals done by Virginia Astley, who sounds like a British waif floating along in the air. The music, however, is as ephemeral as her voice and complements it well. The true beauty, however, apears on a new version of the Eurythmics "Here Comes the Rain Again," sans keyboards and precussion. Annie Lennox's gloriously strong and melodic voice turn the original danceable dirge into something peaceful and soothing without losing its strength. A rather extraordinary album, I recommend LILY WAS HERE to anyone who is a Eurythmics fan, and even more so to those who have escaped David Stewart's magic. -- ---------jeffrey j. middents-------------------------------------------- -----------corky@eleazar.dartmouth.edu---------------------------------- -------------"o bless the freedom that you never chose..." w.h. auden-- ---------------"the picture you see is no portrait of me..." new order--
