nyssa@abnji.UUCP (nyssa of traken) (04/29/85)

Two owls have been heard in the last week in Mendham.

One screech owl was heard last Monday, and over the weekend
a great horned owl was heard.

I am just a beginner in bird watching when compared to others I have
seen but I had what some may condider a rare oppertunity. A few years
ago I moved into a new development. Behind our backyard was a
farmer's field of alpha hay. It was about 300 yards wide and ended at
the edge of some woods and a swampy kind of stream. At the edge of the
woods were some particularly large trees. In the largest tree directly
behind our house a Great Horned Owl was nesting. I was able to observe
them for about 3 months before they left the nest. Since the area has
been developed more I have not seen any of them for about 2 1/2 years.
But on certain clear summer nights they can be heard claiming their
territory. I would esitmate they (it) are about 1 mile away when I can
hear them at night now.
The chance to see these magnificent creatures close up was truly
rewarding. I hope that some of you get the same chance.

Last year I went bird watching at the Malheur Field Station in
South-East Oregon. There were two Great Horned Owls sitting in a
tree just beside the road. I was able to get within fifty feet of
them, and focus a Questar telescope on them. I could look right
at their great big eyes as they were looking right at me.
They were very calm the whole time, and I left before they did.
They truly are magnificent.
