[comp.archives.admin] [list.para] Wide Area Information Servers Unix release B1

emv@msen.com (Ed Vielmetti) (06/13/91)

I want to be sure to call people's attention to this announcement -- I
think that WAIS could very well be a preferred distribution mechanism
for quite a few materials which are currently available only via
anonymous FTP. In particular, it's a wonderful way to browse through
big collections of information when you have sort of an idea what
you're looking for but don't have the exact words.

There have been some preliminary discussions about serving up 'archie'
using WAIS, and I've approached the folks at think about putting up a
full text search on old comp.archives articles using WAIS. Now that
it's in an open beta test I can tell you all about it....

This stuff is cool. Take a look. Check it out.

New Unix Internet Release (Beta Release) Available

Thank you for the interest in WAIS. The servers on Quake (including the
directory of servers) has gotten 4500 requests from 193 different hosts all
over the world in a couple of months. There are now 35 servers including
one in Norway (UiO_Publications.src), poetry (poetry.src), as well as a
Connection Machine serving all sorts of things.
