[comp.society.development] Latin American mailing lists

reiter@aifh.ed.ac.uk (05/26/91)

I think comp.society.development now more or less exists, so I'll start
posting some bits and pieces I've collected on relevant mailing lists.
Other people should feel free to make their own contribution!

                       Date: March 25, 1991

                           INTRODUCTION

You will find here electronic mail addresses and information that will
help you to locate and subscribe to the latin american mailing list of
your choice. The members are people that have a common national origin
or an interest in that particular region. They exchange information and
news, and discuss about topics such as politics, gourmet food, traveling,
and many matters of daily life. They also serve for professional exchange
or just to make new friends.

You should write to the appropriate e-mail to subscribe or get more
information. Please, DO NOT SEND ME REQUESTS FOR SUBSCRIPTIONS! I do not
administrate any mailing list. Membership in these lists is subject to the
approval by their administrators.

Some lists use LISTSERVERS. This is mentioned in the Service line.
The name of the listserver is in parentheses next to the word Listserver.
In these cases, please REFER TO THE INSTRUCTIONS in section 10.0 to find
out how to use a listserver.

The mailing lists listed here are non-commercial (free access) and one
member volunteers to administrate a list. For more information about the
regulations concerning electronic mail, please refer to the appropriate
documents in the public directories of your system or ask your system
manager.

For each country, you'll find:

1. the region covered by the list;
2. a short description of its purpose and interests;
3. the type of list (mailing, listserver, etc.), and relevant information;
4. the e-mail addresses to contact the list;
5. the status to date (active-planned-unknown);
6. additional information, such as the dominant language or membership.

Please, send any corrections or additions to the address below.

10.0 ***** LISTSERVERS

Some lists use listservers, programs that need instructions from the user
to receive or distribute information. The user can use the listserver by
sending e-mail with "commands" that are acceptable to the program. For
instance, to subscribe and get help from the MEXICO-L listserver, send
e-mail to listserv@tecmtyvm.bitnet, including as text of the mail these
lines:

SUB MEXICO-L <your full name>
HELP

to quit the list send e-mail to that address with this command:

SIGNOFF.

To send messages to the members, you need to send your mail to the address
served by the listserver. The "username" is given in parentheses in the
Service line (item 3). In our case, the e-mail address is:
mexico-l@tecmtyvm.bitnet

All listservers work in the same way. Read the instructions you will
receive to learn new commands and procedures. If you have problems using
this facility contact your system manager or the appropriate administrator.
