***************************************************************************

All Fulbright Lecturing and Lecturing/Research awards go through the
Council for International Exchange of Scholars, 3007 Tilden St., Suite 5M,
Washington, DC 2008-3009. They have a general e-mail address:
	/C=US/ADMD=Telemail/O=NCHE/DD.UN=CIES.STAFF/@sprint.com
			    ^
			    |
			that's the letter Oh
Put the name of the addressee on the subject line. The turn-around time
on e-mail is rather long.

Applications are due August 1. Fulbrights are restricted to US citizens.
Teaching awards normally provide travel and "local expenses", which are
basically enough for the year but don't provide for extensive vacation
travel. One of the best benefits is school fees for children, which can
be one of the most expensive items. Many faculty members will match a
Fulbright with a sabbatical, which turns out to be a good deal.

Of the above postings, I know most about the position in Kenya. Moi
University is in the 'western highlands" of Kenya, a very pleasant although
decidely rural area. Eldoret is an easy days drive from Nairobi over good
roads. The area is not on the usual tourist 'safari' routes but is near
several parks (Mount Elgon, the home of the mining elepants, is nearby, and
Lake Begoria, a wonderful place I discovered only at the end of my stay in
Kenya wtih great camping sites, is a couple of hours away). Moi is the
newest university in Kenya and, as of three years ago, was pushing to get
itself going. Therefore the 'consult on curriculum development' will be an
important role

It's been almost 20 years since I've been in Togo and Ivory Coast, but
remember that the French were most successful in instilling that most
important part of their culture: cuisine.

I am chairing the Fulbright evaluation panel in computer science this
year and I *U*R*G*E* those with strong teaching credentials to apply.
In recent years, there have been few applications. I expect that
there would be more postings in the third world if there had been more
high-quality applications.
