(SCO) today demonstrated for the first time a prototype version of SCO Open Desktop for RISC systems. The demonstration provided conference participants with a preview of the Advanced Computing RISC (ARC) version of SCO Open Desktop, the standard UNIX System for the new Advanced Computing Environment (ACE). Twenty-one leading hardware and software vendors launched the ACE initiative in April, 1991 to define open system standards that will enable organizations to link desktop computers, departmental servers, and mainframes in distributed computing environments. ACE specifies two hardware standards: the Intel - based PC (x86) platform and the MIPS -based ARC platform. The ACE participants selected SCO Open Desktop as the standard, integrated, graphical UNIX System to support both of these platforms. SCO Open Desktop, already a leading software solution for x86-based systems, is a powerful, advanced, 32-bit operating environment that fully integrates the UNIX System, graphical user interface, data management, distributed networking and other services. It provides multiuser, multitasking, security, symmetrical multiprocessing and integrated networked windowing capabilities, and supports applications compliant with all major open software standards. ``SCO Open Desktop is already setting a new standard for desktop computing with x86-based systems, and is supported by all of the system vendors backing the ACE initiative,'' said Scott McGregor, vice president and general manager of SCO's Distributed Corporate Computing Unit. ``This demonstration shows that the ACE vision of a truly open environment for distributed computing that offers the same operating environments on both PC-based and RISC-based platforms is fast becoming a reality, with SCO Open Desktop leading the way.'' Running on a MIPS-based DECstation 3100 TM , the prototype version of SCO Open Desktop for RISC systems demonstrated several of its client utilities, as well as the X Window System TM Version 11 Release 4, and the OSF/Motif TM 1.1 graphical user interface. SCO also demonstrated the prototype's ability to interoperate with x86-based systems via its built-in TCP/IP and NFS TM networking protocols. Like the current version of SCO Open Desktop for x86 systems, the prototype for RISC systems complies fully with key open system standards such as IEEE POSIX TM and X/Open XPG3. SCO expects a Developer's Kit for SCO Open Desktop for RISC systems to be available later in 1991. The first commercial release of the system is scheduled for mid-1992. The Santa Cruz Operation, Inc. is a privately held company recognized internationally as the worldwide leader in open system software solutions for industry-standard hardware platforms. SCO offers a wide range of UNIX System software solutions, including the SCO Open Desktop and SCO UNIX System V operating systems, as well as comprehensive training and support services. To date, SCO has shipped over 435,000 UNIX Systems -- more than any other vendor and fields one of the largest UNIX System technical teams in the world. Founded in 1979, SCO maintains regional headquarters in Santa Cruz, California, Washington, D.C., Toronto, London, and Tokyo. # # # SCO, The Santa Cruz Operation, the SCO logo, and Open Desktop are registered trademarks of The Santa Cruz Operation, Inc. in the U.S.A. and other countries.
