[comp.os.msdos.desqview] SVGA versus Desqview

sigma@sun.ipl.rpi.edu (Kevin Martin) (05/04/91)

I have Desqview/386 V2.26 running on a 386/25 with 4Mb RAM, no cache. I
have a Tseng3-based SVGA card with 512K on it, and my monitor can display
the 640x480x256 mode.

With some graphics programs which use "special" SVGA modes, palette entries
get the wrong colors, and scan lines flash white as the screen is being
accessed. Some programs have better luck with the palette, and sometimes
the flashing scan lines go away as well.

I can't get graphics windows in any 256-color mode, should I be able to?
Backgrounding a 256-color program reduces it to a hideous 16-color
representation. What I'm wondering is if there are some settings I'm
missing, or if an upgrade would help with any of these problems.

I'm also interested in finding out if anyone has managed to get 19200 baud
ZModem downloads working in the background. Mine timeout, recover, and
pretend to continue, but the file is corrupted as a result. I know this
should be possible - on an XT with a 386SX accelerator card, I was able to
do background downloads at 19200 baud using PC-Mix.

Thanks,

QD's position is that SVGA support in DV is too much work.

All they need to do is support VESA, which will cover over 90% of the SVGA
boards in existence (ATI, Video7, STB, Tatung, Tseng, Orchid, Paradise, etc.).
Those boards which don't already have VESA support in ROM only need a 2-3K
TSR to add the support after the fact.

QD would never say that SVGA support for DESQview/X is too much work,
would it?
