Hi everyone: 1) This is a brand new newsgroup. 2) There is a LISTSERV list (members of the list communicate by sending mail to the list which then distributes the mail to all of its members) called ACMSTCHP which is for student chapters, and there is another one for regular chapters called ACMCHAP. Anyway, this newsgroup was proposed by one of the ACMSTCHP members. 3) ACM HQ can not access comp.org.acm (as well as many other ACM chapters and members), but they do read and post to ACMSTCHP and ACMCHAP. 4) I am in the process of gatewaying a LISTSERV list with this newsgroup so those who can not directly access comp.org.acm will be able to read and post to it (especially ACM HQ). If anyone is against this, please contact me. 5) For the "dead" chapters out there: a) Do you have the Student Chapter Manual? b) Do you have the Lectureship Program book? c) Do you have an ACM Information Center (it's a cardboard display full of wonderfull ACM information)? All of the above things can be obtained from ACM HQ. You can send e-mail to acmhelp@acmvm.bitnet d) In order to get people active in your chapter, you need to set up a lot of activities and do a lot of publicizing. An activity that always attracts a lot of prospective members is a picnic or happy hour. Tours of various computing facilities also seem to attract students. We have had a lot of intersting speakers (4, and one more will be speaking here in a couple weeks) from the ACM Lectureship program this year, and attendance at these lectures has been good. e) Make sure ACM HQ knows the state of your chapter by sending in activity reports, lectureship evaluations and the income tax form. An annual activity report was just sent to all of the faculty advisors of student chapters. Fill out this report and send it in! f) If there a "regular" ACM chapter nearby, or another student chapter, that is in good shape, they will help you find some speakers, tours etc. (they might even be able to help the chapter out financially) 6) How many of you produce a newsletter? On the ACMSTCHP list, we are going to exchange newsletters, and I discovered that a lot of chapters don't have a newsletter. How do you *guarantee* that your members know about all of your chapters events? Posting electronic news or hanging up signs doesn't guarantee that your members will see them (well, maybe if the school is small enough). -- Michael Allen Clore "It is unworthy of excellent (persons) to lose OSU-ACM Chair hours like slaves in the labour of calculation" Baron Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz (1646-1716)
