[comp.org.acm] People to People

lalonde@CIS.OHIO-STATE.EDU (robert c lalonde) (05/02/91)

Hi, Phil.
People to People is for real. I took part in a student tour in the
summer of '86. I am sorry, that I don't have all of my information about
People to People and there are a few differences between the Student Abassador
Program (I am pretty sure that is what it was called.) and the Citizen
Ambassador Program. Here is what I know:

The People to People Program was started by President Dewight D.
Eisenhouer to promote better world understanding through ordinary people.
The general idea is to learn about them while they learn about you. I was
supplied with information about the countries that I would be visiting and
got to stay with three families while I was there. I spent three days in
Washington, DC. in orientation and then flew to Shanon Airport in Ireland.
I visited Ireland, England, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Russia in one
month. I learned a lot, but because I went to so many contries in such a
short time I can't remember in what country I was in when some things happened.
If I were to go again I would like to spend more time in fewer countries.

The program isn't funded, I suspect, because Congress can't afford it
or if Congress did pay for it, it would cost more. (The Government is the best
customer a business could possibly have!) If I recall correctly you will have
a lot of discounts and remember that the country that you are going to will
probably be very happy to have you.
Sorry I don't have anymore information unless you want to wait until
Monday, when I can get my information from home. So if you want that info. or
you want more on my experiances in Europe, I would be glad to answer them.
You can also write to People to People about the program to get more info.

Hope I have been of some help.
	-Rob
