[net.rec.birds] Are Whipporwills becoming rare?

CJC@psuvm.BITNET (09/21/85)

Some 20-30 years ago, when I lived in rural Pennsylvania, I used to hear
whipporwills (sp?) fairly often. I've moved around a good bit since then,
but for the last 8 years I've been living in semi-rural Pennsylvania, and
I haven't heard a one, not ever at all. I'll grant they're not my favorite
songbird, but they were distinctive and I liked them. So, does anyone know
where can I go to hear on occasionally? Or are they dying out like so many
other species? If so, why?
