To any interested bird watchers in the Twin Cities area: Sat. Sept. 14, I sited a Pilleated Woodpecker at Blackhawk Park, Eagan. This was the first I've ever seen, and yes, he did look like Woody. Blackhawk Park is a wonderful place for birdwatching. The trails are wide and well maintained, civilization is close enough for comfort but far enough not to scare the wildlife. It is also a beautiful place.

(I hope he wasn't much trouble to install :-)
We used to have one of these magnificent creatures regularly visiting
our back yard in Gainesville, FL. He pecked a hole fifteen feet long
though an old basswood tree, sounding much like a small jackhammer.
But when he started on the aluminum siding (not my choice BTW), it was
really noisy! He never seemed to learn that it was not a good place to
work for bugs (or was it?) They are certainly worth keeping an eye
peeled for in wooded areas, esp. near creeks, in FL if you're there.
