[comp.org.acm] SIGOPS

jmason@gpu.utcs.utoronto.ca (Jamie Mason) (05/31/91)

I hope this is the right place to ask this. I want to join a sig
about operating systems. I notice SIGOPS, but the form says

SIGOPS -- Operation Systems

Does this mean the same (i.e. Operation Systems == Operating
Systems), or is it something entirely different?

I think it was just a typo. SIGOPS is about Operating Systems; its
journal is "Operating Systems Review".

I think you will need to correct a typo which has propogated to lots
of places. Apart from CACM, I think it is on most stand-alone membership
application forms.

I have *never* seen SIGOPS written as "Operating Systems". When
I first joined the ACM last fall, the little 'take one' pamphlet said
'Operation Systems'. If it had said 'operating systems', I would have
joined it on the spot. As it is, I joined the AI sig instead, who I will
drop at the end of the year, having received *nothing* from them.

I have CACMs from Jan 91 to May 91 (which I just got
*yesterday*). (ACM publications seem to arrive sporadically up here in
the great white north :-) In *each one*, the backside of the "membership
aplication" which lists the sigs has said "SIGOPS (Operation Systems)".
May I draw your attention to:

        Jan 1991: p. 122
        Feb 1991: p. 98
        Mar 1991: p. 108
        Apr 1991: p. 128
        May 1991: p. 106
