[comp.org.acm] Student Chapter Newsletters...

uhacm@menudo.uh.edu (ACM/UH Student Chapter) (06/01/91)

Being that the summer break is a hard time to communicate with our
members, we are planning on mailing out a newsletter to provide our
members information for the fall semester. However, this is our first
attempt at a newletter and we would like to get some ideas on what we
can put in it. We would really like to get some newsletters from some
other Student chapters (nothing fancy, it is content that we are working
on) and some tips for what would be good to put in it. We want to keep
it to 1 page (front and back) if possible, but, we can do more if it is
_really_ necessary...

Thanks

I served as editor for the UF ACM chapter newsletter for two years.
The biggest problem I had was getting people to contribute articles
for anything longer than a one page issue. Most of our one-pagers
came out at the beginning of the semester much like your planning.

If you're trying to make it an information oriented issue I'd
definitely suggest a calendar of meetings and events scheduled in the
fall. If new officers were elected at the end of the spring semester,
a list of their names, phone numbers and/or email addresses might be
nice. If you have room, include some background info on each one or
even their picture. How about an article on services provided by the
chapter? Do you sell disks? Maintain a software library? Provide
software discount coupons? Run a tutoring service?

If you're going for something a little longer, how about a bio sketch
of a factulty member? An article reviewing some new hardware or
software that's rescently been made availible to students in the
department might interest those who don't know about it yet.

Good luck.
