A lot of discussion at the ACM Computer Science Conference and SIGCSE Technical Symposium last February in San Antonio focused on the lack of student oriented tracks at the meetings. A commitment was made to try to improve the amount of material at the meetings that would be appropriate for ACM student members. Following discussions with Bob Cupper, ACM Student Chapters Committee Chair, and Boots Cassel, Chair of the Computer Science Conference Committee, I have volunteered to try to arrange student-oriented tracks at CSC'92 and SIGCSE'92. Since it is the beginning of summer and many faculty and students are away from campus, it may be easier to try to arrange some panel sessions at one or both conferences than to have student paper sessions. The following are some suggested panel topics: 1. Computer science job market survey, including the nature of positions current graduates are getting and expectations of employers. 2. Job hunting skills: preparing a resume and interview techniques. 3. Graduate school opportunities in computer science, including assistantships and fellowships. If anyone receiving this message would like to organize a panel or participate on a panel that addresses any of the above topics (or any other that is student oriented) please let me know as soon as possible. I will try to coordinate people as best I can from my end. If you can arrange a complete panel of 3 or 4 people on your own, great. Submit a proposal to the person in charge for the meeting you would like to present it at (contacts and addresses follow). Panel proposals are due as follows: For CSC'92: Due August 1 to Jagan Agrawal, Computer Science Telecommunications Program, University of Missouri-Kansas City, 5100 Rockhill Road, Kansas City, MO 64110-2499. Phone: (816) 235-2360. E-mail: agrawal@vax2.cstp.umkc.edu. For SIGCSE'92: Due October 1 to myself (see address below). If you have any questions or need more details, please feel free to contact either one of us. If you have ideas for other student oriented activities at either CSC or SIGCSE please send them to me. I am going to try to have a much more comprehensive student program at the '93 meetings. Thank you for your efforts on behalf of our students. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Cary Laxer, Ph.D. ACM Student Chapters Activity Monitor, East Central Region Mail: Associate Professor of Computer Science Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Campus Box 100 5500 Wabash Avenue Terre Haute, Indiana 47803 E-mail: laxer@master.cs.rose-hulman.edu Phone: (812) 877-8429 Fax: (812) 877-3198 ---------------------------------------------------------------------
