[comp.org.acm] ACM E-MAIL REPLIES

georges@cs.uq.oz.au (George Semeczko) (06/09/91)

I have recently (last month) sent two e-mail letters to
the ACM using the e-mail addresses found on most of the ACM
publications and in this news group. I have since heard no
replies. As one was to do with my resubscription to the ACM I
was hoping for a fairly quick response.

Alas, I have still not heard back from the ACM. My email did
not bounce back so I presume it did get through to them. I did
request in my last e-mail to them for an e-mail reply just to
tell me that they did receive it, but still no response!!

Has anyone else experienced any problems e-mailing to the ACM (or
even has anyone received e-mail replies from them) or am I just
having mail problems that I don't know about.

In desperation I did phone them concerning some of my queries,
but as 3 minutes 18 seconds of phone call cost me $A 3.96 this
becomes a costly exercise. I hope as a technologically based
organisation ACM does use e-mail for some replies.

So if anyone can tell me what they know about the current state of
e-mail to the ACM I would be very greatful.

George,
Although I've sent just a few notes to ACM, the response was quick,
within 24 hours, I would say. I take it that you are sending your
inquiry to ACMHELP@ACMVM ?

If you check this list, about a week ago, I posted a gripe about the
size of the ACM stubs. The next day, I had E-mail back from someone
at ACM who obviously reads this list (or bit.listserv.acm-l at least)
who let me know that they are using up their stock of the oversized
stuff. I don't know why you aren't getting a response from them. Does
your mailer have an ACK option on your notes? Go figure!

Some usenet sites have problems getting to bitnet. I have found the
following helps if you have this problem:

	person%ACMVM.BITNET@cunyvm.cuny.edu

It has been discovered that fully half of the children tested have a
  below average IQ!

It should be noted that since ACM is connected to BITNET, people sending
email to ACVM.BITNET should restrict themselves to messages whose content
meet the strict acceptable-use guidelines for BITNET, e.g. the
restrictions on commercial use.

I have also had the black hole experience with acmhelp:
I sent a query about publications (proceedings) not arrived,
exactly a month ago, getting neither acknowledgment nor response.
