[comp.os.coherent] Wondering about Coherent system

vancleef@iastate.edu (Van Cleef Henry H) (04/04/91)

I have seen the ads for Mark Williams Coherent for $99 and been aaked by
people who knew that I was playing with Minix as a teaching tool what
are the differences.

I already see that someone is building TCP/IP support, so won't ask
about that. Does it have any BSD-type extensions like sockets? What
utilities like kermit and vi does it come with. Man pages? Source code
for any or all parts of the system? Anybody using it as a teaching
tool, and how does it stand up. How is documentation. What is the
minimum system it can run on. (I am running Minix on a 2 x 720K 640K V30
laptop with room to spare). Is there a Macintosh version?

One question I won't ask is "will is support X11R4?"

Are there any repository sites for goodies and toys to go with Coherent?
Or is all this brand new? I feel inclined to spend $99 for an
evaluation copy.

Well, it's supposed to be SV compatable (from what I remember), so I doubt
it does sockets, but I could be wrong. It has an editor called Elvis that
is a VI clone.. dunno about kermit.

When I first saw the Coherent ad, I called the company. I asked them what
kind of things the little package can do. The guy on the other end said
"It's fully source code compatable" (don't remember to which version)..
so, if you can find source for X11R4 for the version that it is source
compatable to, you can run X11R4. Assuming I remembered right, and it's
SV compatable, there ought to be LOTS of repositories of source code out
there (all over the place as a matter of fact..)

Hope that helps..

John

COHERENT in its current form will NOT support X11R4. Keep in mind that
COHERENT is in the small memory module, all executables must be <64K.
It is compatible with Research UNIX V7. This is not AT&T Sys V. It is
UNIX Version 7.

Doesn't Coherent have a 64K limitation? I'd like to see X11R4 work
with 64K!!!
