[comp.os.coherent] Emacs for Coherent?

ab2r@quads.uchicago.edu (Marshall Abrams) (04/13/91)

I've never used Coherent, but I understand that all software must run
in 64K. Is there an Emacs around that does this? I'd love to run
Unix on a PC, and Coherent is about the only thing I could afford, but
I wouldn't have much use for the operating system if didn't have a
halfway adequate writing tool. (With all due respect the
vi-afficianados, vi is not not for me.)

Thanks.

There is a program called ELLE (ELLE Looks Like Emacs) which gives you
basic editing functionality, and even has a sort of C-mode. I have used it
on small-model MINIX, and it was great.
It is available (via FTP) at plains.nodak.edu
in directory /pub/Minix/all.contrib/Elle41

There is a lot of code, but it shouldn't have to be hacked too much. You
may have to change the #includes to match coherent's directory structure.
It's about (I think) 400K of 13-bit compressed shar archives. There is
an executable, but it's for minix.

I really have to recommend MINIX over coherent, at least until this 386
version comnes out. My MINIX - 386 is running the real emacs 18.55 right
now!

MicroEmacs is distributed with Coherent. MicroEmacs is powerful, fast,
and easily customized.

If only it would handle large files. I hate VI.
