Hello. As many of you may be aware, I maintain an Internet mailing list that serves the Coherent community. There are three parts to the service: an echo, a digest of the mailing list traffic, and a digest of the newsgroup. Of these, the latter is the most active-- I've been publishing it roughly daily since the newsgroup appeared. The echo pretty much takes care of itself, and the list digest is now roughly weekly. The process of creating a digest is a simple one, thanks to awk, csh, and MH. In the case of news, I simply save each message into a back-quoted csh script that creates a MH message from the contents of the posting. At digest time, I type a single command that builds an RFC compliant digest and brings it up in the editor, where I elide long signatures and so forth. The process of sending a digest takes about two minutes, given that I am already reading the newsgroup on a daily basis. Why, patient reader, am I telling you all this? Because I plan to be out of the country a couple times this summer, and there is no possibility that I can create the digests during these periods. What is needed now is for some public-minded soul to step forward and offer to take over this responsibility for me. It has to be a very special person: a person who uses MH and csh, so the scripts don't need to be re-written. The existing aliases on my machine can be used to send out the thing. As for list administration-- that will just have to wait until I return. Please contact me if you have the inclination and capability to offer to help out here. Others-- thanks for your indulgence. -Scott Rose -- Scott Rose rose@cs.wisc.edu (608) 238-3801
