[comp.os.coherent] Formatting new hds with Coherent

nlane@well.sf.ca.us (Nathan D. Lane) (05/22/91)

Here is a definitive reference for anyone wanting to format and add a
second drive or partition to their Coherent system.
	1. Plan your configuration CAREFULLY, you're stuck with it
	2. run fdisk from Coherent to partition the drive
----	Now the fun begins ----
	3. Assuming hard drive 2 on controller 1, partition 1 type:
		'/etc/badscan -v -o at1b_bad /dev/at1b /dev/at1x'
The important part above is the /dev/at1x - that is the partition
table for your drive and saves you from having to calculate the
	number of blocks manually
	4. '/etc/mkfs /dev/at1b at1b_bad'
this makes the file system on the drive according to the bad
blocks in the prototype file made by badscan
	5. Edit /etc/mount.all script and add the new drive and where
to mount it so it will be mounted when you reboot
	***** IMPORTANT ******
	6. Edit /etc/umount.all script to umount the drive during a
shutdown!!!!! You'll never forgive yourself if you forget this!
	7. Remember to create a directory that is empty where you
	can mount this drive.
	e.g. 'mount /dev/at1b /usr/spool' where /usr/spool is empty.

A good way to move a bunch of directories around is to archive them
into a tar file, delete the old directories, mount the new drive and
un-tar the archive onto the new drive (directory). I used tar when
I added an 80 MB news spool to /usr/spool.
