Ha!  I started having that problem after changing my PC to use a SCSI disc.
About a fortnight ago fsck started core-dumping.  I booted off another
partition, downloaded mwcbbs!/usr/spool/uucppublic/download/updates/fsck.Z
and ran that.  It fixed the disc.  I haven't had any problems since then.
The fsck I had been using was from the 3.1.0 version and was dated June or
July '90.  The version from mwcbbs was dated October '90.
