Coherent is limited to 64k segments, one for code, one for data. It does not support Berkeley sockets, which most mud and mucks depend on. It would take so much work to port a mud that you would be better off to write one yourself, but even then, the code would have to be very very tight, or forgoe many features. And unless you are into writing drivers for an ethernet card, and writing or porting TCP/IP code, forget about others being able to telnet into your mud. If you aren't dissuaded yet, refer to the newsgroup comp.os.coherent. They'll be able to help you out. I also archive the traffic there and from the old mailing list (coherent-request@cs.wisc.edu) in the ftp site piggy.ucsb.edu in /pub/coherent/mail-list. I tried out Coherent last summer and gave up as it was too limited for me. Fo those who want a taste of Unix without busting the budget, it is a fairly decent system. For those who are interested in running tinymud or tinymuck, you are best of with a BSD derived system (BSD, SunOS, Mach, Ultrix, etc.). I understand that tinymud ports to SysV Release 2 and 3 with some work. Contact Captain Picard (dburr@ocf.berkeley.edu) for info. Tinymud and Tinymuck 2.2+ compile with out of the box on SysV 4.0, and only need minor tweaking in some of the script files. Contact me if you run into trouble on SVR4. (By the way, the list just posted lists CaveMUCK at ferkel.ucsb.edu. We've been on piggy.ucsb.edu (128.111.72.50) 2000 for several weeks now, and the move looks permenant.) Apologies for any random spelling errors in this post. My roommate's R key is a bit fried, although I think I caught all the problems.
