[comp.os.coherent] Database availability

Ok, here's a real world question regarding coherent. I'm configuring
a bunch of unix systems, and am looking at Interactive Unix.
The main things I need from it are support for databases and
TCP/IP (SLIP) for a WAN.

Now, I called Faircom, who makes ctree ( a database library package)
and they said the yes, they have a stripped down version that
runs under coherent, but don't expect much because of the 64k limit. And
their other products won't run at all.

And uucp cannot be used for a WAN that requires any type of real time
access or even quick access, let along multiplexing lines. Whereas SLIP
will let me hook all of the systems together and handle it automatically.

So, are there any database packages, and preferably servers, which would
run on coherent (along with the application program, or course, including
complicated screens and such) either for sale or on some ftp site somewhere?

And is there any way to set up Coherent in a wan? File transfer is not
enough, because the queries are large and have to be scrolled through and
all of the information can't be efficiently transferred back and forth. Not
to mention that only 1 connection at a time will be supported, instead
of multiple sockets and routing. I thought maybe through the Phone
companies X.something network, but have no experience with it.

Anyway, I can't see using it in a real application like this, which is
unfortunate, since for 20 systems, I have to buy 20 unix licenses.

BTW, why did someone say that Mach would soon be effectively free? I haven't
been following.

Not a chance.
