DATA COMPRESSION CONFERENCE 1991
================================
A conference on data compression is to be held in April 1991 in Utah.
As far as I am aware, it is the first ever conference devoted to data
compression. If you want to go, you had better move fast.

Below is the original posting for the conference. It seems as if the
closest newsgroup to the subject that James Storer could find was
comp.theory! Hopefully with the creation of this newsgroup, this will
no longer be a problem.

See you at the conference,

Ross Williams

THEME:
Data compression has become an essential component of high speed
communications and mass storage.
This conference will provide an international forum for
current work on data compression and related areas.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

     coding theory,
     quantization theory,
     parallel algorithms and compression hardware,
algorithms for specific types of data
(including text, images, video, speech, maps, instrument data,
     graphics, animation, and bit-maps),
     transform methods,
     wavelet and fractal techniques,
     string searching and manipulation,
     closest-match retrieval,
theory of minimal length encoding and applications to learning,
     system issues
(including error control, data security, and indexing),
     medical imagery,
     scientific and space data archives,
     data compression standards
