[comp.compression] ARJ 1.10

chuangss@en.ecn.purdue.edu (Shyne Song Chuang) (03/31/91)

Hi there everyone,

Recently, I learnt of a new compression program for IBM PCs. This new program
goes by the name of ARJ and the latest version is 1.10. It's currently
only available for the IBM PC but from the .doc file, it seems that a UNIX
version (simplified) will be released in late 91. ARJ seems really good.
It has a lot of commands that PKZIP and LHA left out, like stuff for sorting
files in archives etc... There are a lot of extra commands and here comes
the good part, it is supposed to compress BEST, equal to LHA 2.10 and is
slightly faster.

It gives compression that is definitely better than PKZIP and all the others.

Yours truly,
Kev

Have you made a comparison with /pc/pd2/lha211.exe?

Hi there,

I haven't really tested and compared the 2 programs myself, but the .doc file
for ARJ 1.10 claims that it compresses as well as LHA 2.10... Actually,
I wasn't aware that LHA 2.11 had been released already, but based on the
differences described in the LHA 2.11 doc file, there is no major difference
between 2.10 and 2.11. 2.11 only corrects a few bugs; there is no difference
in compression.

I just meant to let the guys on the net know about the possibility of having
a new archiver by the end of this year...

Yours truly,
Kev

That's right. It seems to be a bug fix only. Oh yes, for general
information how to get these goods in case someone does not know:

The wares are available by anonymous ftp from garbo.uwasa.fi, Vaasa,
Finland, 128.214.12.37, or by using our mail server (use the latter
if, and only if you don't have anonymous ftp). If you are not
familiar with anonymous ftp or mail servers, I am prepared to send
prerecorded instructions on request. (If you don't get the
instructions from me within a few days, it will mean that your email
address cannot be reached by a simple email reply. Contact your
system manager for devicing a proper mail path for you, because
unless you do, you wouldn't be able to utilize the mail server
anyway. If you are in North America first consider using an ftp
site near you to spare the overseas load.)

It does have many nice extra options (such as the multi-volume packed file).
However, it is not faster than LHA 2.1x. It's about half the speed. It is
faster than LHA 2.1x if you use less compression, but then it is slower than
ZIP and doesn't compress as well.

>It gives compression that is definitely better than PKZIP and all the others.

It compresses better than PKZIP, but LHA 2.1x beats it on about 9 out of 10
files. Regardless, the results of the two are very close.
