I heard a little about a new algorithm developed by IBM called ABIC. I don't know what those letters stand for. The algorithm has supposedly been published, and it is being (has been?) implemented in hardware. It is claimed to be about 20% better on text images than CCITT group 4, and about 300% better than G4 on half-tones. I am looking for more information and implementations and/or products to experiment with. I am also interested in anything that is likely to do significantly better than G4 on document images which are primarily text. -- Rich Goldschmidt: uunet!fjcp60!golds or golds@fjc.gov Commercialization of space is the best way to escape the zero-sum economy.
