Anyone: I need a good algorithm for doing somewhat lossy graphic data compression. I've heard about JPEG, but thought it might take forever to compress/decomp. Anybody who knows anything about JPEG please send me email. I need the maximum compression ratio possible for an online newsletter that I'm including pictures with. Is JPEG patented? Is there some other compression algorithm that does roughly the same as JPEG but is free? Is JPEG based on fractal algorithms? I know there are such things. Well...send me mail..
