[rec.hunting] B/A Rifles in 7.62x39mm

My distributors list two such beasts - an Interarms Mark X (Mini-Mauser
action), no sights, MSRP $465.00, and a Ruger 77 with Zytel stock, no
sights, 10-shot rotary magazine, MSRP $595.00. Mighty pricy pieces of
iron!

Now for a question - why go with the 7.62x39? The cartridge
performance is not as good as the 30-30 - Frank Barnes lists it as
"marginal for deer-sized animals". The cheap surplus ammo for the 7.62x39
is mostly FMJ, and not suitable for hunting. The Winchester and Remington
SP loads in 7.62x39 are 123gr and 125 gr, respectively. Those are a tad on
the light side (for my tastes, your mileage may vary.) Besides which,
30-30 is lots easier to type than 7.62x39mm. 8-)

I've got a Marlin 336CS that I use for hunting, either with Winchester
150gr JHP or Remington 170gr HP - with the Micro-Groove barrel it's dead-on
to about 175 yards.

I've been very pleased with the Marlin - I swapped the rear
semi-buckhorn for a full buckhorn, so I get a nice sight picture. It comes
up fast, it's accurate, and reasonably cheap to feed. I picked it up used
(just barely) for $150. Given the terrain in which I hunt (mostly wooded
mountains) it's got all the range I'm likely to need - though I wouldn't
choose to argue with a bear with it. 8-)

Just some random, low-velocity musings -
    Mark

I do know that the Mini Mark X can be had for $250 out of Gun
List. (call 715 445 2214). I have noticed that there is a larger
and larger difference between the MSRP and the real price as
time goes on. . . any clue as to why?

Two thoughts: In a bolt action you can handload to much higher levels, I've
seen loads for 130gn @ 2600 out of a bolt gun. Secondly, one could
have the chamber reamed out to 30 ppc configuration ( it removes most of the
body taper on the cartridge, thus drasticly increasing the powder capacity).
I don't as of yet have numbers for the 30 ppc, but if anyone is interested
I'll send/post them when I get them.

That's true, but it seems like a fair amount of trouble (and expense -
rechambering should be done by a competent gunsmith) to go to get a hunting
or varmint rifle. Given the availability of guns chambered for varmint and
hunting rounds, I wouldn't mess with a 7.62x39. This neglects, of course,
the fact that it is FUN to rechamber and modify guns. But then, this IS
rec.hunting, not rec.guns. B-)
