Well, as promised, here is my report of the Annual Palmetto
Sportsmans Classic held in Columbia, S.C. this past weekend at the
State Fairgrounds. This show is held with the hunter and fisherman in
mind and so there were many exhibits, booths, vendors, and displays
set up by sporting shops and marine dealers. There were also lectures,
demo's, video's geared toward's the outdoor's person going on
constantly. There was an official deer rack scoring booth set up by
the wildlife dept. with certified scorers to measure antlers on trophy
bucks that were harvested and mounted during last years deer season.
Man, I couldn't believe some of the deer racks I saw there!! I didn't
realize that S.C. was capable of producing such fine trophy bucks.
There was one 8-ptr. in particular that had massive main beams that
looked to be about 8-10 inches in circumference at the base. Another
gentleman had a perfect 10-ptr. that was very nice. Made me get my
hopes up for this coming deer season! ;-))

The two really big draws were the State Turkey Calling Contest and
the BuckMasters Top Bow Tournament Series. My friend and fellow hunt
club member, Steve Cobb, placed 6th in the Open Division which means
that he competed against 16 other top callers from various states in
the SouthEast. Not too bad in my opinion. A gentleman by the name of
"Skeet" Thomas from Chester, S.C. did win both the Open division and
the State Resident Div.

And finally, the 1991 Southern Division Buckmasters Indoor Shooting
Series was held all weekend long with the final round being televised
live on the TNN cable channel Sunday at 1:30 P.M. with Jackie Bushman
hosting the events. I attended the second round on Saturday before the
Calling Contest and watched the archers take their shots. The archers
shoot at lifesize deer targets that pop-up at various ranges from 15
to 60 yds. with different points awarded for the targets. Five points
for the nearest and 22 points for the farthest. There were 32 archers
from several South- East states competing. As it turned out, a
gentleman named Dale Pitts from Anniston, Ala. won the event with a
three day total of 867 pts. He had one perfect round on Sunday with 12
of 12 arrows hitting the bullseye. Dale took home $2100 dollars in
cash and a Yamaha 350 4-wheeler. He will also get to compete in the
Nat'l event to be held in July. The second place finisher also shot a
perfect 12 out of 12 round while I was there on Sat. but they were not
all bullseyes. He finished just seven points behind the winner! Close
finish, huh? Jackie Bushman stated that before this weekend only six
perfect rounds had been shot before in 5 yrs. of the Buckmasters
competition.

A very nice show all in all and certainly worth the three dollar
admission. It is usually held the weekend before the Turkey season
opens up which is April 1st. Well, this is long enough. Later!!
                                         Keith Boyd

P.S. I went out last Sat. morning and was very disappointed to only hear 1
or 2 toms gobble. Most of the people I talked to at the show had not
heard to many either so we think and hope that they will get started
up and gobble more by this weekend.
