[rec.hunting] Turkey Hunting.

keith@clodii.columbiasc.NCR.COM (04/09/91)

As promised, here are the results of my Turkey hunts last Friday
and Saturday morning. The results were very bad for me but great for
the Turkeys. ;-) I was unable to get to my hunt area Thurs. evening
before dark to roost any birds and this lack of preparation became
evident on Friday morning as I only heard 1 or 2 Toms gobble but they
were too far off to go after. (Can you say trespass?) Saturday
morning was not much better but I did have one roosted on some public
land and I did my owl call at daybreak and he let out with a
resounding gobble. That was it. I mean this bird got lockjaw after
that and no matter what I did he would not answer anything I tried. I
waited for almost two hours and never even heard him fly down. It was
like he disappeared! Such is Turkey hunting. Honestly people, I
usually do better than this. Will try them again this Saturday
morning. At least a good friend of mine, Steve Cobb, was able to
harvest two nice gobblers last week. He got an 18 1/2 pound bird on
Tues. morning and an 18 pound bird with two beards on Fri. afternoon
down at our hunt club property. But, he is a good caller and had more
time to scout and hunt these birds than I did. Not making excuses mind
you, but setting the record straight! ;-)) I want waste anymore
net.time though unless I have some luck or near misses before the
season ends April 30th. Regards,
                                       Keith
