I am working on plans for a combined Deer and Elk hunt to Colorado this fall. Since this will be my first out of state hunt, I want to do everything possable to make it a safe, enjoyable and successful trip. I would like too hear from any of you out in netland that have hunted Colorado as out of staters. We are planning to drive to Colorado from California in a camper. We would probably arrive in the area on Sunday, purchase licenses and head directly to the hunting grounds. The plan right now is too hunt somewhere on the west slope. We may use the camper as a base camp and backpack in for a day or two to get away from the road hunters. We are looking for an area that would offer a high success rate. We are not looking for a trophy in particular, just good meat animals. Mule deer are the number one priority however one member of the party is planning to get an elk tag so an area that offers both would be important. The type of information that I need is Any problems that we are likely to encounter. Licenses, crowds, angry locals, problems with access (we will be hunting public lands) and other things to look out for. Areas to hunt. I am not asking you to give the location of your favorite spot, just general areas, perhaps a particular national forest or county were you have had success in the past. Hunting stratagies. All my deer hunting to this point has been in California were one can easily become more concerned with avoiding other hunters (and anti hunters) than with a successful hunt. Suggested reading. The game regulations are obvious. Zumos recent book on Western Mule deer was good but any other suggestions would be helpfull. I lived in Colorado for a few years during the early eightys but at that time I was not hunting. I know the state in general but have not spent much time on the west slope. Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Other readers probably will be interested but if you would rather not post, you can email my account.
