[rec.hunting] Over-Harvesting

robert%isgtec@uunet.UU.NET ("Robert A. Osborne") (06/28/91)

After my last message, I feel I should say more about over-harvesting,
and in general just a complete lack of knowledge/respect a lot hunters
seem to have.

The area that we have our hunt club in is quite close to most of the
members. The guys who run the hunts spend a great deal of time in
the forest (lumber-jacks, a game warden, park-superintendant,
fire boss, etc.) and know how many deer (how old and what sex) are in
the area and how many we can kill without harming next year's (or 2002's)
hunt. We own almost all the land we hunt on and take care of it.

At the hunt camp down the road the hunters pile into the area once a
year (deer season) shoot anything they see. One year they _each_ shot
a deer (funny they only got one the next year). For months afterwards
we find beer bottles and candy wrappers strewn about.

If you're going to hunt KNOW the area your hunting in, and play a part
in the conservation of that area. Better yet BUY some land and keep it
a forest forever (our hunt club currently owns about 1000 acres of land).

Rob.
