KSRAO@power.eee.ndsu.nodak.edu (03/16/91)

Before adjourning sine die on 11 th March, Lok Sabha passed some
important business:

      1. As we already know, extension of President's Rule in Punjab beyond May
1991.
      2. A bill on salaries and allowances for MPs. An amendment granting
pensions to MPs who have been members for one year or more has been passed. An
MP from Bengal, A. K. Roy said that the house should not pass any such raises
to its members.

      3. A resolution seeking the removal of Justice Ramaswami of Supreme
Court. A panel of three judges have been appointed to go into the charges. (I
could not ascertain whether it is the start of an impeachment process or a
private member's bill)

      4. Mr. Devilal said that neither any MP nor any MLA wants a midterm
election and they should go and meet the President and appraise him of it. He
said A. B. Vajpayee first mooted 'National Government' and he is for it.

      5. The minister of Railways has said that even if the House is dissolved
(remember this was on the day before dissolution) all MPs can avail of their
free rail travel using the current ID cards.

In the late afternoon, there was a group photo of all the MPs,
traditionally taken on the last day of the life of Lok Sabha.
