MANN ARRESTED IN PUNJAB New Delhi (Reuters): Hardline Sikh leader Simranjit Singh Mann was arrested on March 7 in Punjab in what authorities called a preventive measure. Indian news agencies said Mann, leader of the Akali Dal party which is pressing for self-determination in the agriculturally-rich northern state, was hiding in a farmhouse in the Tarn Taran district when he was arrested. 2.MATERIAL USED IN MANDAL COMMISSION MISSING New Delhi (PTI): The Union government informed the Supreme Court that ithas failed to locate the basic material regarding one of the four sources used by the Mandal Commission for identification of 3,743 backward classes. In an affidavit filed before a five judge constitution bench, hearing a challenge to the constitutional validity of the Mandal report, the Union government said despite a diligent search, it has not been able to locate the `markings' on the basis of which castes were identified as backward classes under the Commission's socio-educational survey in 31 states and Union territories. 3. JOB RESERVATION SCHEME IN KARNATAKA Bangalore: The Karnataka government announced a 30 percent job reservation for women in public services, a new syllabus for primary and secondary schools and a five point program to cut bureaucratic red tapism. 4. INDIAN HOCKEY TEAM ON 4-NATION EUROPEAN TOUR FROM MAY 14 New Delhi: India will play 10 Tests during a four-nation European tour this year, Indian Hockey Federation chief R.Prasad said. He said the men's team would make a three-week tour of Belgium, England, Germany and the Netherlands from May 14 to June 2.
