KPFK radio reported this morning (20th March) that a statewide strike was observed in Kashmir in response to a call by militants to protest an alleged gang rape by drunken soldiers of the Indian army soldiers last month. 500 drunken Indian soldiers were alleged to have rampaged through a Kashmiri town, gang-raping 53 women ranging between the ages of 18 and 80. The Indian defense ministry labelled the report as "malicious and untrue." The Kashmir government is conducting an investigation into the allegation. Over 2300 persons have been killed in Kashmir since the start of the anti-India movement by the militants.
