In Srilanka, militants shot dead seven persons including three women in
different part of the country in the last twenty four hours. According to
military sources in Colombo an LTTE militant was killed when army ambushed
the rebel hideouts in western Mannar dist. Meanwhile indifinite curfew
has been imposed in the northern Jaffna Peninsula.

Several launch vehicles and (chinese) short range ballistic missiles have been
found inside Pakistan by the American intelligent sources. According
to Washington post, this has raised the suspicion that China and Pakistan have
concluded a missile deal despite Beijing's
assurance to Washington not to sale missile system to other countries.

The chief elction commissioner of India Mr.T.N.Sheshan has said that 
there was a clear difference of opinion among various political parties
about the preparedness for elections ( both assembly and parliament)
in the northern state of Punjab. Mr.Sheshan said parliamentary 
elections will be held between May 10 and May 26th. He was addressing
a press conference in Chandigarh. He also said that ceiling on the 
expenditure incurred by candidates for contesting elections would not
be enhanced. At present, the ceiling for a candidate contesting Lok sabha
elections is Rs. 1,50,000 and for the assembly polls , Rs. 50,000. 

The all India freedom fighters conference called upon the people to
remain vigilant against the forces trying to divide the nation in the
name of religion. It said, the forces of fundamentalism are trying to 
whip up communal passion for their narrow politcal ends.

A late news: The Gandhi samadhi at Rajghat, was defiled by the agitated
Bahujan samaj activists following skirmish with Rajghar staff. The 
activists damaged the steps on which the wreaths are placed, broke
flower-pots, EXTINGUISEHD THE JYOTI and broke its bronze cover.

The Indian commerce Minister Mr.Subramanya swamy has favoured the free
flow of trade between India and Bangladesh in certain areas. In an
interview to a newspaper published from Dhaka, he said the two countries
must encourage free trade through borders. Mr.Swamy suggested that
links between the two countires must be built to both governmental and
non-governmental levels and findout areas of cooperation.

The official level talks between the foreign secretaries of India and
Pakistan concluded In New Delhi. The next round of talks are to be
held in Islamabad in the late August or early september. 

The Naxalite activity is reported to be on rise especially in the Nizamabad
Karimnager and Warangal dists of Andhra Pradesh. According to the radio
they set ablaze a bus near a village in Nizamabad dist on Friday.

Banned: by the union ministry of forests and environment headed by
Mrs.Maneka Gandhi, the training and exhibiting of all animals in
circuses with immediate effect. The decision is expected to effect
about 250 small and major circus companies. 

Discovered: a new type of cold surgery - cryosurgery that selectively destroys
tissues by freezing them for the treatment of cancer in the ENT.
Doctors at  Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan  hospital in New Delhi
presented the results of the operation and their followup for 5 years
at the sixth overseas conference of the royal society  of Surgeons
in Edinburgh(UK).
