The Cong(I), BJP and the CPI and M have agreed to participate in
the elections in the northern state of punjab if the polls are postponed
to the end of June or the first week of July. An 11 member delegation
of the four parties met the president Mr.Venkataraman in NewDelhi today
in this regard. The CPI president Mr.H.K.Surjit  has welcomed the
govt's initiative on resuming talks with the sikh militants of Punjab
but said, people wants to know what is being discussed, He said his
party favours even granting amnesty to those who renounce terrorism
and separatism. The JD also urged the president to take all political
parties into confidence on his talks with the sikh leaders. The party
spokesman Mr.Jaipal Reddy said such sensitive  discussions should not
be treated like a private affair.

With only two days left, filing of nominations continuous to pour in.
Over 2000 candidates filed their nomination papers today (* a list
will be posted later this evening ). Prominent among them are
the senior BJP leader Mrs.Vijaya Raje Scindhia, the former Haryana
CM Mr.Chautala, Mr.Abdul Rahaman Antulay - the former CM of Maharashtra,
and the former union ministers Mr.V.C.Shukla, Buta singh, Shankaranand,
Shivaraj Patil and the film star Sunit Dutt.

The president Mr.R.Venkatarman leaving New Delhi today on an eight day
state visit to Vietnam and the Phillipines. In Manila, the president
will deliver a lecture at the Phillipines university.

Several leaders and organizations have condemned the killing of the
editor of a Urdu daily by terrorists in Srinager today. The
editor of the Urdu daily ( name unclear ) Mr. Mohd Masood was
shot dead by the terrorists in Srinager city around 10:30 this morning.
According to an agency report, the editorial g(u)ild of the valley has
decided to suspend the publication of newspapers in the valley indefinitely
in protest against the killing.
