The damage and response of govts -------------------------------- (NY Times and local radio) In Bangladesh cyclone, the death toll is put at 92,000. The govt. says it could easily top 100,000. Millions are left homeless. Widespread hunger and disease are likely. Bangladesh appealed to U.S., Britain and Japan for $1.4 billion. Britain promised $2.2 million. India donated $790,000 and three helicopters. The European Community will give Bangladesh $12 million. The U.S. has so far given $125,000 in immediate aid but will determine the aid package after an assessment. The Bangladesh Red Crescent Society and the London based Oxfam are noted for their relief work. The following is the list of agencies accepting donations for Bangladesh cycone relief. __________________________________________________ Bangladesh Embassy has set up a relief fund: President's Relief Fund Bangladesh Embassy 2201 Wisconsin Ave., NW Suite 300 Washington DC 20007 Tel: 202-342-8372 Cheques are to be addressed to 'President's Relief Fund'. The person I talked with on the phone told me that it would be set up very soon (They were busy with the Kurdish problem) and we could send money to them. I am sure ARC is going to send relief to Bangladesh. ----------------------------------------------------- Shubhechha, Dipen ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other agencies (New York Times) Adventist Development and Relief Agency International, 122501 Columbia Pike, Silver Spring, Md. 20904 (301) 680-6380 B'nai B'rith International, 1640 Rhode Island Avenue, N.W., Washington 20036-3278.
