counting of votes begins ========================= New Delhi, June 16: counting of votes has begun today for 497 Lok Sabha constituencies spread over 22 states and seven union territories, and in over 1300 assembly seats which went to polls in three phases. Counting of votes for 14 Lok Sabha and 124 assembly seats in Assam rpt in Assam will, however, begin on June 17 to facilitate mixing of ballot papers. The delay in the start of the counting of votes, earlier scheduled for this rpt this morning, was conyeved to the election commisSion by the chief electoral officer(ceo) of Assam. The chief election commissioner, Mr T Seshan allowed the Assam ceo to postpone the counting of votes by a day so that ballot papers could be mixed and then counted for security reasons. While elections to 204 Lok Sabha seats in nine states and four union territories were completed on may 20, polling in 294 constituencies were held nearly four weeks after the scheduled dates following the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on may 21. About 150 experts have been mobilised for the tabulation of election results in respect of all seven parliamentary constituencies, Mr Nath said. The total number of staff deployed was about 4000 which included assistant returing officers, sector officers,counting staff, attendents and electricians. East Delhi has the maximum number of 112 tables where counting of votes is expected to go on for fifteen rounds.
