The main opposition Telugu
Desam party led by Mr N T Rama Rao was forging ahead with a
lead in nine of the 17 Lok Sabha constituncies, for which
counting was taken up in Andhra Pradesh today.

Prof.Ranga trailing in Guntur:
==============================

      According to information available at 1530 hours,
veteran Congress(I) leader prof Ranga who established an early
lead was trailing by 8,000 votes over his nearest tdp rival 
Mr.Lal Jan Pasha in guntur constituency.

BJP leading in Hyderbad and Secunderabad:
========================================

      The Congress(I) which was leading in six constituencies,
surrendeed the lead to the tdp in two constituencies including
guntur. While the BJP was leading in Hyderabad and
Secunderabad constituencies, CPI and cpi(M) allies of TDP were
ahead in Nalgonda and Miryalguda, respectively.

      Dr D venateshwara Rao, son-in-law of Mr Rama Rao, who
was trailing in the first round, was leading by a narrow
margin of 1,000 votes in Baptla constituency over his nearewt
Cong-i rival, Mr S benjamin, a member of the dissolved Lok
Sabha, after the second round.

Chandigarh

Mr harmohan dhawan, the union
minister of civil aviation and Samajvadi Janata party
candidate for the Chandigarh parliamentary seat was trailing
behind at number three at the end of third round of counting
here today.

      The Congress(I) candidate and the former rajya Sabha
member, Mr pawan Kumar bansal, was leading by over 7700 votes
over his nearest BJP rival, Mr satya pal jain.

      Out of the over one lakh votes counted so far, Mr bansal
got 37,963 followed by Mr jain 30<277 and mr dhawan 24,603.

      In all 55 candidates are in fray for the seat including
the Janata Dal and the Bahujan Samaj party. 
              
Ahmedabad: maintaining its 1989 tempo, the
BJP was forging ahead in 14 of the 22 constituencies where
counting of votes cast in yesterday's poll in Gujarat was
under way.

      Counting of votes in three other constituencies,
deferred due to 17 incidents of booth capturing, would be
taken up tomorrow at noon. Election co]mission has decided
that the repoll in these areas would be taken up tomorrow,
0700 hours. The trend of the counting of votes polled in the
rest of these constituencies would not not be revealed. The
constituencies are JamNagar, Porbandar and Surat.

      Former BJP president, Mr L K Advani, the state unit
president, Mr shankersinh waghela and Ms Deepika Chikhalia,
the +Sita+ of the +Ramayana+ tv serial were among the BJP
cndidates forging ahead. 

      The main rivals of the BJP nominees were the candidates
of either Congress-i or Janata Dal (Gujarat) which have
entered into a poll pact.
