      Bombay, June 16: Congress(I) bagged two seats and
is leading in 29 out of 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in
Maharashtra where counting of votes began today.

      Counting for the remaining eight Lok Sabha
constituencies, including six in greater Bombay, will be taken
up tommorow. Election to the Nanded seat was countermanded due
to the death of a Bahujan Samaj party (BSP) candidate.

      BJP is leading in pune and Akola constituencies, CPI in
wardha and Shiv Sena in parbhani and aurangabad. The trend in
kulaba, nandurbar and yavatmal constituencies is so far not
available. 

      The Congress-I clinched its first
victory in the opposition dominated Rajapur constituency held
by former finance minister, Prof Madhu Dandavate (Janata-Dal)
and retained the neighbouring Ratnagiri seat in two of the 47
Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra, results of which were
announced so far.

      Maj. Sudir Sawant (Congress-I), a new political entrant,
defeated his nearest ShivSena rival Mr WamanRao Mahadik,
former Bombay mayor and former MP, by 41,046 votes. Prof
Dantavate who represented this constituency five times after
the death of Mr nath pai shortly before the mid-term poll in
1971, came a poor third with 87,011 votes.

      The Congress-I retained the Ratnagiri Lok Sabha seat
with the re-election of Mr GovindRao nikam who defeated his
main rival Mr AnantRao Gite (ShivSena), Bombay corporator, by
a slender margin of 12,928 votes.

      According to the trends available here, Mr Pandurang
Phundkar (BJP) was leading over his Congress-I rival Mr
Sudhakar Gangane in Akola and Mr Anna Joshi (BJP), deputy
speaker, Maharashtra assembly, over Mr V.N.Gadgil (Congress-I)
by 4,000 votes in pune. 

Calcutta 
========

   West Bengal chief minister, Mr Jyoti Basu was
leading by 1432 votes over his inc rival Mr Amar
Bhattacharjee,  from satgachia constituency at the
end of first round of counting here today.

   Mr Basu polled 4325 votes as against his rival's 2893.
