Sultanpur (Uttar Pradesh):
==========================

The Late Mr Rajiv Gandhi, was leading from the Amethi Lok Sabha
constituency in early trends as counting began amidst tight
security at the collectorate here today.

According to election authorites, there are more than
nine lakh voters, an average of more than 40 per cent votes
cast in the poll on May 20 and repoll on June 12.

According to the returning officer, Mr A K Jain, he
would declare the winner even if it is late Rajiv Gandhi. Only
the election certificate will be given to his family.

In the event of Mr Rajiv Gandhi getting elected, the
election commission May in due course notify a bye-election to
fill the vacancy.

Election rules provide for countermanding an election if
a candidate dies before polling begins, but the death of a
nominee before the results are out does not not alter the poll
process.

Mr Gandhi's poll agent, Captain Satish Sharma, MP, was
not present as counting began a little later than 8 A.M. On a
sombre note. But local congress-i leaders were present at the
counting centre.

congress(i) was in the lead in two constituencies--dohad and
bulsar, both reserved, after first round of counting here
today.

The Janata Dal(G) was in the lead in another reserve
