Bombay 

      Bombay, June 16: the Congress(I) has repeated its
1989 performance in its fortress, western Maharashtra, by
winning 11 out of 12 Lok Sabha seats and captured three of the
Janata Dal's seats -- one each in konkan, western Maharashtra
and north Maharashtra -- while the BJP and Shiv Sena have
opened their accounts winning one seat each in pune and
hingoli in marathwada.
      The Janata Dal, which had five representatives in the
dissolved Lok Sabha, remained unrepresented so far.
      The Congress(I) candidate, Mr vittalRao gadgil lost the
pune seat to the BJP nominee, Mr anna joshi. The party however
gained three seats from the Janata Dal's bastions of Rajapur
in konkan, malegaon in nashik district, and Khed in pune.
      The deputy speaker of Lok Sabha, Mr Shivraj patil was
returned on a Congress(I) ticket from his hometown
constituency of latur district.

Congress(I) bags 80 out of 112 seats

      New Delhi,June 16:  Congress(I) was on a winning
spree tonight bagging 80 of 112 Lok Sabha seats declared as
the party's main rival BJP sufffered major reverses in Madhya
Pradesh and Rajasthan under its rule.

      While Congress(I) seemed set to improve upon its 1989
performance analysts said an absolute majority may still elude
the party in the 543 member Lok Sabha.
      The BJP won 31 seats while telugu desam won five and
others got four.
      Prominent winners included BJP leader l.K.Advani from
GandhiNagar and new Delhi, former ministers, Mr.
K.Shankeranand,Mr.Buta Singh, mr.Rajesh pilot,mr.Nathu ram
mirdha, Mr.Ram niwas mirdha,mr.Shivraj patil,mr.Jagdish
tytler,Mr.Eduardo faleiro giridhar gomango and the Karnataka
pcc(I) chief, Mr.Oscar fernandes.
      The losers included civil aviation minister harmohan
dhawan,senior Janata Dal leader and former union finance
minister,Mr.Madhu Dandavate, former union ministers
Mr.Janardhan poojari mr.Jagdeep dhankar ,former Rajasthan
Chief minister Mr.Jagannath pahadia nawalkishore
sharma,Mr.Natwar Singh and mr.V.N gadgil.
