      CPI (M) may back Congress
      =========================

      New Delhi June 16 the west bengal Chief minister,
Mr Jyoti Basu, tonight hinted that the CPI(M) might support a
minority Congress (I) government, if need be, with the
objective of avoiding fresh elections in the event of a hung
parliament.
      +In the event of a hung parliament, we have to make some
arrangement. Some programme has to be worked out+, Mr Basu
said, adding he would not rule out the possiblity of his party
backing the Congress (I) to form a government.
      Speaking in an interivew to Doordarshan in Calcutta, he,
however, made it clear that there was no question of the CPI
(M) joining such a government.
      The marxist leader said that the CPI(M) would consider
supporting to any party except the BJP in the formation of a
minority government, if such was the case, provided some
programmatic understanding was evolved.
      +We (CPI-m leadership) will have to discuss this all+,
he said.
