New Delhi, June 22: the Prime Minister, Mr.P.V.Narsimha Rao today asked the people to be prepared for +sacrifices+ to restore the health of the economy and said the government would tackle with determination the dangers posed to the country by problems in Punjab, kashmir and assam. Spelling out the priorities of his government, the Prime Minister in his first nation-wide telecast announced setting up of a composite rapid action force to quell communal riots and establishment of special courts to try communal offences. The Prime minister dwelt at length on the economic crisis besetting the country saying there were no soft options before the nation as the people had to be prepared for sacrifices to preserve economic independence. He announced that the delayed union budget would be presented within a month and that the dialogue with the international monetary fund would be continued to tide over the precarious balance of payments situation. New Delhi, June 22: the Prime minister, Mr.P.V.Narasimha Rao, said that it would be the endeavour of his government to restore India to its place of honour in the commity of nations and ensure its voice is once again heard with respect and attention in world fora. +Our relations with neighbours will enjoy the priority they deserve so that our region becomes an area of peace, prosperity and stability+, he said in his nation-wide telecast tonight. The Prime minister said +it is unfortunate that at the very juncture when India needed to give a lead in this historic endeavour its international prestige suffered setbacks and relations with friends and neighbours were neglected. The Prime minister said his government would tackle +with determination and single-mindedness+ the problems in the three border states. +While genuine grievances will be redressed, terrorism and other fissiparous tendencies will be dealt with firmly+, Mr. Rao said. In his 20-minute telecast both in hindi and english, the Prime Minister also announced that the minorities commission would be provided statutory status with a view to enhancing its effectiveness. While referring to rapid industrialisation, the Prime Minister announced that foreign direct investment was welcome to accelerate the tempo of development and +obstacles that come in the way of allocating foreign investment on a sizeable scale will be removed+. He promised a fair and remunerative price for farm produce and assured strengthening of the public distribution system would receive the govermnent's immediate attention. Mr. Rao, who dealt briefly with foreign affairs, said relations with neighbours would enjoy priority and the government would endeavour to restore India's place of honour in the comity of nations.
