FRESH VIOLENCE REPORTED IN GUJARAT STATEWIDE DEATH TOLL GOES UP TO 12 Baroda, Gujarat (PTI): Two persons were stabbed to death in Baroda city of Gujarat state on April 29, bringing the toll in the weeklong trouble to 12. While one person was stabbed to death in Abnkleshwar during the curfew- relaxation period, another incident occured in the curfew-free Dandia Bazar and Vagaruwad areas, police said. 2. EC CHIEF ASKS STATES TO PROVIDE MORE SECURITY New Delhi: India's election chief threatened on April 29 to cancel next month's general elections in states that failed to provide adequate security to voters, candidates and poll officials. T.N.Seshan told a news conference he would "not hesitate to blow the long whistle" if states did not fulfil prescribed security requiremnets. 3. RECORD NUMBER OF ASPIRANTS TO CONTEST FORHTCOMING ELECTIONS New Delhi: A record number of aspirants are likely to be in the field when the nominations for the forthcoming elections to 10th Lok Sabha and Assemblies of seven states and Pondicherry close on April 26, the Press Trust of India reported. 4. CONGRESS PARTY TO BOYCOTT PUNJAB POLLS New Delhi (Reuters): Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's Congress partydecided on April 25 to boycott polls in the Indian state of Punjab in June, aborting its own attempts to forge an electoral alliance with three other parties against militant Sikh candidates. NewDelhi: ========= New Delhi, June 25: Mr Sudhakar Naik was sworn in as Chief minister of Maharashtra and the veteran CPM leader, Mr Jyoti Basu, took oath as Chief minister of west Bengal today while the swearing in of the Congress I ministry in Assam was postponed to saturday. In Guwahati, the swearing in of new ministry headed by Mr Hiteswar Saikia was earlier slated for thursday but official sources said it would now be held only on saturday. Mr Naik was sworn in by the Governor, Mr C Subramaniam, as the 11th Chief minister of Maharashtra at an impressive function at the raj bhavan in Bombay succeeding Mr. Sharad Pawar who will be inducted into the union cabinet tomorrow. Mr. Naik was earlier unanimously elected as leader of the Maharashtra Congress(I) legislature party in the presence of aicc observers. Seven other ministers of the erstwhile cabinet of Mr. Pawar, who submitted his resignation this morning, also took oath. A 12-member council of ministers headed by veteran CPI-M leader, Mr Jyoti Basu, was sworn-in in Calcutta by the west Bengal governor, Prof S Nurul Hasan. All other 11 ministers of the new left front council took oath of office and secrecy in Bengali at the sprawling lawns of raj bhavan. Follow up of an earlier posting ( on Bomb blast in Delhi ) ========================================================== This was the 11th bomb blast incident in the capital this year. fourteen people were killed and over 100 injured in these blasts. a senior police officer investigating the blast said the device had +no timer attached to it+. he said the bomb, weighing around 400 grams, did not have +much lethal power+. the cfsl experts and bomb disposal squad rushed to the spot and collected the remnants of the explosive device. police officers at a meeting reviewed the situation and took a serious view of the incident. Of the 14 injured, five were rushed to hospitals and discharged after treatment. they were identified as ms Jasbir Kaur, Mr Raj Kumar and Dr Amalesh Arya, his wife Mrs Seema Arya and their driver.
